9:15pm SPYROS MELARIS (Second performance)
The music he plays is unique to the Betroka region of Madagascar where it’s influenced by all the traditional sounds of the area together with some softer South African dance rhythms.
He didn’t start to play until he was about 15 years old. A neighbour played the guitar and Modeste loved the sounds so much that he borrowed it and taught himself. Then he moved away with his own guitar that he built on his own at the workshop in the local technical college where his father was a teacher. He used fishing line for string so it meant he had to hold it very close to hear the sound but he persevered even though it was probably totally out of tune.
“Hugues is a pleasingly smoky-toned singer and a fine guitarist, able to play rhythm and lead all at once. He’s so effective in this musical sleight of hand that audience members scan the stage in search of a (non-existant) second guitar player.”
9:45 TONY MOORE
