Tonight we have an evening of great live music from:
Estelle Mey is a French singer and songwriter. She
started writing and performing music in Iceland,
where she used to live. Gaining influence from
classic and alternative rock, Estelle mixes power
and softness/ dexterity into her music producing
an innovative blend of new progressive genre,
unique to her.
Her intense and contrasting voice takes you on
a journey as you soar from Icelandic landscapes
to a stage with Robert Plant-esque vibes.
Her influences come from a combination of PJ
Harvey, Björk and Moby but also The Pixies, Led
Zeppelin or Nirvana for the raw quality of her
rock. Throughout her album we can also sense
her NIN influences.
She has supported artists such as
SINCLAIR, SHAKA PONK, LUCE, MINA AGOSSI
in France, and JAGUAR in Iceland. The young
singer received the Special Jury Prize at the
Söngkeppni framhaldsskólanna in Reykjavik.
She won the RADIO SCOOP TOUR and played to
a crowd of over 25,000 people. She finished 13th
at the music TV show «Nouvelle star» in France
(French American Idol).
She has also played at various festivals and
venues throughout Europe, including the Ella
Guru night hosted by PIXIE LOTT.
In 2017 she released her first album The Key thanks
to a crowdfunding campaign that surpassed its initial
target by over 208%! The Key, the first track on the
album, is gaining increasing popularity; it is being
played on radio stations such as BBC Introducing
throughout Kent, and France Bleu in France.
The album is also regularly played on West Track
and Deal Radio in the UK, RNV in Switzerland,
and RDWA and Declic radio in France.
Hunter plays drums, Kiki plays guitar and Parker plays bass. They all sing. Together, they are the Top Boost, Vancouver’s premier (and only) psychedelic power pop trio. They combine catchy melodies and vocal harmonies informed by classic ’60s groups like The Beatles, The Byrds and The Zombies. They add a touch of bubble gum pop sweetness, then filter it through the loud guitars and showmanship of ’70s glitter rock. The Top Boost.
Their debut EP “Turn Around” was recorded and mixed in Vancouver and mastered at Abbey Road Studios in London. The record is a kaleidoscopic sound collage driven by jangly guitars, pounding drums and wistful harmonies. It was named one of the best local CDs of 2016 by the Vancouver Sun and one of the 10 best EPs of 2016 by Power Popaholic.
The Top Boost have been playing live to enthusiastic crowds at clubs around Vancouver including two sets at the International Pop Overthrow Music Festival and an opening slot for the legendary Pointed Sticks.
They have also been featured on Adult Swim’s “Fish Center Live” several times.
They are about to fly to the UK to play two nights at the world famous Cavern Club in Liverpool.
The Top Boost evoke memories of a bygone musical era. Their sound may call forth feelings of nostalgia, but they are too young and vital to be brushed off as a nostalgia act. The Top Boost are able to seamlessly incorporate classic sounds into their music without ignoring contemporary influences, creating something that is both familiar and distinctive.
Meiko’s songs find common ground between indie pop and coffeehouse folk, with her distinctive alto vocals sharing the spotlight alongside acoustic guitars, pianos, and unique arrangements. A longtime songwriter, Meiko was raised in the small town of Roberta, Georgia, where she discovered her love for public performance after singing at a Southern Baptist church. She then took up the guitar, playing her father’s Gibson before receiving her own instrument as a birthday present.
At the age of 18, Meiko left home for greener pastures, eventually resettling in Los Angeles and scheduling recurring performances at the Hotel Café, a popular haven for L.A.-based singer/songwriters. Meiko’s self-titled album appeared in September 2007. Eventually every track on the album would find song placement in such high-profile TV shows as “Grey’s Anatomy”. She soon found herself receiving a considerable amount of attention on the digital folk music charts.
Boosted by her Internet popularity, Meiko signed a contract with MySpace Records/DGC in June 2008, and a re-release of her endearing debut album followed in September. Amid a campaign of Internet videos and promotion, the follow-up album The Bright Side arrived in May of 2012, and spawned a #1 single in Japan (“Stuck On You”).
In 2014, Meiko unveiled a moodier, bass-heavy sound with her third full-length album, the Jimmy Messer-produced Dear You on Concord/Fantasy Records. The Fantasy-issued Lovers & Fighters EP from early 2015 was followed in October of that year by a self-released EP, Live Songs from the Hotel Cafe, which featured live renditions of several fan favorites as well as a new song called “Perfect Fit.”
Finding further success without a label, Meiko issued her fourth LP, Moving Day, in the summer of 2016, reaching number nine on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart while also cracking the Top 200.
2018 has seen the release of the “Back In The Game” single, produced by Wally Gagel (Best Coast, Family Of The Year) and selected as “Today’s Top Tune” by tastemaker L.A. radio station KCRW.
On May 25, 2018, Meiko will release a new album called Playing Favorites through the independent label Chesky Records. Recorded live in an abandoned church in Brooklyn, Playing Favorites features covers of songs Meiko grew up listening to, by artists as varied as Sade, Blind Melon, Duran Duran, and Otis Redding.
Christy O’Donnell is a young singer from Glasgow. His soulful pop music is selling out shows in his native Scotland and his first London show at The Bedford promises to be a treat.
