8:30pm FERGUS

FERGUS has received critical acclaim from the likes of BBC Radio 1, 6 Music, Radio X, Clash, HUNGER, Wonderland, Songwriting Magazine, Atwood, WTHB, TMR, and Hidden Herd. Collectively his songs have amassed over millions of streams on streaming services.

Music has always framed his life. A choirboy with perfect pitch, he grew up around a mother who doted on classical music, and a tone-deaf father who matched his lack of musical skill to an omnivorous love of punk, folk, pop, and heaven knows what else. “I’ve always been moved by music,” he reflects. “I’m not actually that visibly emotional in life, I’m more internal. Music has always been there, so that’s how my emotions get out.”

A window to view the world through music is wrapped around his being. As a child, he performed across the globe with the King’s College choir, obeying the strict dictums of choral life.

Winding up studying in Bristol, he became a fixture on the city’s open mic scenes. Desperate to learn his craft, FERGUS tried to unlock something inside himself – yet the more he tried, the more anxious he became. “I didn’t really have confidence in the songs,” he sighs. “I didn’t see the reaction I would have needed to have gained that confidence. I didn’t really notice my own skills, basically. It took a good couple of years until I actually developed my own way of playing guitar.”

His parents attended a charity event, and won a day’s studio time – the producer at the helm was Jake Gosling, one of pop’s heaviest hitters.

The two instantly hit it off. FERGUS and Jake sat for hours in the studio, swapping reference points, discussing gigs, and reminiscing about key songs in their lives. “I kept saying that my goal is originality. It’s my number one. I’ve relaxed a bit with it, but I had a chip on my shoulder about being original. I didn’t want to use any chord sequence, or any lyrics that had been used before. And Jake liked that.”

After a while, the producer asked to hear a song, and FERGUS dutifully obliged. He played ‘Sinking’ – which has since gained several million global plays – before Jake nodded, and asked for another. By the end of the day, they’d made plans to record again, and FERGUS was promptly signed to the producer’s in-house imprint Goldun Egg Records, one of the new breed of independent labels carving a name for themselves where the artist comes first.

2018 brought debut EP ‘Purple Road’, before FERGUS released his beautiful follow-up ‘Three Of Swords’. Each new project brought fresh confidence – Jake speckled his folk-hewn elements with pop magic, adding lush electronics and string adornments to those incredibly personal revelations. 2020 brought the ‘Closer Quarters’ acoustic EP, a stripped-down selection that went straight to the core of FERGUS’ work. All the while his audience was growing and growing – songs like ‘Not Enough’ or ‘Nobody Knows’ have cut deep to the heart of thousands of people.

FERGUS’ debut album, a song cycle that touches on matters of the heart. “It’s a love album,” he smiles, “about all the aspects of love and relationships, and the ups and the downs. It’s been over two years in the making. I’m fascinated by bodies of work that are really cohesive, and that tell a story. That’s what I’m hoping to do with this one.”
